The initiative came from Slovenia.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bees play an important role in nature, and for the survival of humans. In fact, every third sponful of food we eat is dependent on pollination. In Slovenia, people are very aware of their incredible mission, so bee-keeping has strong roots in Slovenian tradition.\u00a0Blooming meadows and forests are home to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.czs.si\/wp\/about\/the-carniolan-bee\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carniolan honeybee<\/strong><\/a>, an indigenous Slovenian sub-species of bees. It is known for its characteristics, such as <strong>docility, diligence, humility, and a great sense of orientation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2014, the <strong>Slovenian Beekeepers\u2019 Association<\/strong> launched the proposal that <strong>WORLD BEE DAY<\/strong> be celebrated. The World Bee Day initiative was supported by the <strong>Republic of Slovenia<\/strong> and backed by <strong>Apimondia<\/strong>, the beekeepers\u2019 umbrella association. The Slovenian Beekeepers\u2019 Association says on its website that bees, as pollinators, play an important role for humankind in terms of providing food, food security and nutrition, sustainable agriculture, biodiversity, climate change mitigation, and a healthy environment.<\/p>\n<p>On <strong>20 December 2017<\/strong>, the <strong>United Nations General Assembly<\/strong> finally <strong>declared 20 May as World Bee Day<\/strong>. Every year on this day, the attention of the global public will be drawn to the importance of preserving bees and other pollinators. People will be reminded of the importance of bees for the entire humanity and invited to take concrete action to preserve and protect them and their habitats.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u00bbBees and other pollinators finally have the place they deserve in view of their importance for the world, for sustainable development and the future of humanity,\u00ab<\/em> sad <strong>Dejan \u017didan<\/strong>, <strong>head of the World Bee Day project<\/strong> and <strong>Deputy Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celebrations in Maribor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Slovenia<\/strong> is one of many world\u2019s countries which celebrated\u00a0<strong>the first celebration of World Bee Day<\/strong>. To mark the 1st World Bee Day and the birth of Anton Jan\u0161a, the <a href=\"https:\/\/maribor-pohorje.si\/maribor-tourist-board.aspx\"><strong>City of Maribor<\/strong><\/a> prepared a <strong>guided tour of Maribor<\/strong> on 18 May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>After the guided tour, the president of Beekeepers\u2019 Association of Maribor Associations, <strong>Vlado Vogrinec<\/strong>, presented the <strong>historical development of beekeeping<\/strong> in the region. During the day, on the <strong>Leon \u0160tukelj Square<\/strong> (Trg Leona \u0160tuklja), the <strong>beekeeping market<\/strong> was held along the<strong> tasting of honey delicacies<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>beekeeping exhibition\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>workshops<\/strong> for children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Celebrations in Ljubljana<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cd-cc.si\/en\">Cankarjev dom \u2013 Cultural and Congress Centre Ljubljana (CD)<\/a><\/strong> in cooperation with the <strong>Ministry of Agriculture<\/strong>, <strong>Forestry and Food, the Municipality of Ljubljana, the Embassy of Switzerland and BTC<\/strong> plc. organises and hosts the WORLD BEE DAY on 20 May 2018.<\/p>\n<p>This is just one of the examples how CD, among other goals, aims towards environmental protection through pointing out the significant importance of the hardworking and diligent insects.<\/p>\n<p>Beekeeping in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slovenia-convention.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Slovenia<\/strong><\/a> is a signal of concern for the environment and nature preservation, and CD, the biggest Slovenian congress centre, recongized this some time ago. As a contribution to increasing Ljubljana\u2019s biodiversity, beehives have been installed on the building\u2019s rooftop. Approx. <strong>150,000 buzzing Carniola bees<\/strong> are now pollinating city plants and providing <strong>honey<\/strong> as <strong>a unique CD product<\/strong>. With <strong>urban beekeping<\/strong> on their terrace they are extremely proud on being the pioneer of this kind of Slovenian initiative.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On Sunday, 20 May 2018<\/strong>, visitors of the CD were able to actually <strong>see the CD\u2019s rooftop beehives\u00a0<\/strong>and even <strong>taste the CD\u2019s own Honey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At <strong>7 pm<\/strong> <strong>film and post-screening talk<\/strong>, titled <strong>More than Honey<\/strong>, by <strong>Markus Imhoof<\/strong> in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cd-cc.si\/en\/other\/halls\/kosovel-hall\/\"><strong>Kosovel Hall<\/strong><\/a> were scheduled. More than Honey aims to allow the spectator to understand the drama at play and highlight the pressures of the global economy on the small insects.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>Interactive Pavilion<\/strong>,<strong> talk to the Honey Queen<\/strong>, and <strong>use VR glasses<\/strong> for a <strong>mindblowing experience of a bee flight <\/strong>were available through the day.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from raising awareness on the importance of bees and other pollinators, World Bee Day is also a project aimed at the preservation of our Planet. Slovenia thus prepared for its first celebration of the World Bee Day with a great sense if commitment.
