Ljubljana, Slovenia – In a remarkable revival, the iconic neoclassical auditorium nestled within the lush greenery of Tivoli Park has been reinvigorated to captivate both locals and international event organizers alike.

This renaissance of the Plečnik Auditorium coincided with the grand opening of the 35th Ljubljana Biennial of Graphic Arts. Originally designed by the visionary architect Jože Plečnik in 1933, this picturesque haven in the heart of Tivoli Park was inspired by Greek amphitheaters, serving as an enchanting summer theater. Post-World War II, and well into the 1960s, it transformed into an open-air cinema, adding another layer of cultural significance to its history. However, as time marched on, the auditorium’s vibrancy dwindled. It even briefly metamorphosed into a discotheque before being left to the whims of nature, blanketed by overgrown grass, throughout the 1970s.

The renaissance of Plečnik’s Auditorium has breathed new life into the heart of Ljubljana. This restoration project not only celebrates its rich history but also envisions a versatile space for cultural and congress events. The overarching goal is to create a publicly accessible program, predominantly offering free events that respect the natural beauty of the park and its visitors.

Leading the charge for this ambitious transformation was architect Rok Žnidaršič, collaborating with the architectural studio Medprostor. The International Centre of Graphic Arts (MGLC) has been entrusted with the stewardship of this cultural gem, responsible for curating a diverse program and overseeing event execution. The auditorium’s annual theater offerings will be complemented by content curated by MGLC, drawing from their museum in Tivoli Castle and the MGLC Švicarija residency and creative center. As part of the Tivoli Summer Festival, this newly rejuvenated venue will also play host to a series of concerts.
