Cankarjev dom has been cultivating bees since spring 2011 and is considered to be a pioneer of Slovenia’s urban beekeeping.In December 2017, the UN General Assembly endorsed Slovenia’s initiative to declare 20 May World Bee Day. On this occasion, a special programme was presented to introduce CD’s beekeeping to the public – a relatively uncommon activity for a modern congress centre located in the heart of Slovenia’s capital, Ljubljana.
The diversified roof of Slovenia’s largest congress and cultural centre offers exceptional views of the capital, so if you’re keen to visit it you can do so on World Bee Day. On 20 May, a tour of the beehives was conducted by CD’s in-house beekeeper and the visitors enjoyed a degustation of CD’s honey – a delicacy and a unique gift.
For the daring, a visit of the Bees’ World interactive pavilion was a must. Installed in the Grand Reception Hall throughout the last two weeks in May, this interesting exhibition tool delighted visitors with a VR simulation of a bee’s flight over flowery meadows of Slovenia, as well as high-tech information on the importance of pollination, the role of bees in a healthy environment and global food security.
The Bee Day concluded with ascreening of More than Honey by Markus Imhoof (Switzerland), and a talk on apiculture and the importance of bees for the survival of mankind with the highest-ranking officials from the Slovenian government and the Vice-President of APIMONDIA, an international beekeeping organisation.
