This year’s report on the realisation of the 2030 Agenda sustainable development goals, issued by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) under the auspices of the United Nations Organization (OZN) and the Bertelsmann Stiftung foundation and Cambridge University Press, ranks Slovenia in the 9th place out of 165 countries. Slovenia has been most effective in eradicating extreme forms of poverty, ensuring decent work and economic growth and enhancing peace, justice and strong institutions.

In achieving the 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Slovenia has been most effective in Goal 1 (eradicating extreme forms of poverty), Goal 8 (decent work and economic growth) and Goal 16 (peace, justice and strong institutions). Slovenia, which still needs to address certain challenges, is pleased that it ranks higher than for example Switzerland (16th place), Italy (26th place) and Luxembourg (42nd place).

In most countries the COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a setback in sustainable development, Slovenia, however, has made relevant progress by reaching 9th place in comparison to last year’s 12th place. Achieving Sustainable Development Goals can contribute to sustainable, inclusive and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The latter has shown that we need to speed up the progress in the field of general healthcare and universal access to the key infrastructures, in particular digital infrastructure.

The report is published annually before the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development that takes place in New York. This year’s forum which is the fifth forum since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda will be held from 6 June to 15 June 2021 under the theme “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development”. The forum will also be attended by Slovenian representatives. Together with the European Commission Slovenia, holding the Presidency of the Council of the European Union, will organise a side event of the European Union on sustainable development, recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and green and digital transformation.
