The global meetings industry stands among the world’s most influential economic drivers. It connects cultures, builds economies, and fosters innovation across borders. Yet with this scale and reach comes an equally significant responsibility: to operate sustainably and create lasting value.
Leading by example
Situated in Ljubljana, one of Europe’s greenest capitals known for clean air, vast green spaces, and its European Green Capital title, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre places sustainability and responsibility at the heart of its long-term vision. As one of Slovenia’s leading venues, and part of a select group of convention centres worldwide actively integrating sustainability across all levels of operation, the venue sets a high standard for what a modern, future-oriented event space should represent — both locally and globally.
Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre produces around 500 MWh of electricity annually from solar panels — enough to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 480 tonnes each year, which is roughly equivalent to the emissions of 100 passenger cars driven for a full year. |
Energy efficiency at the core
A standout achievement is the venue’s investment in renewable energy. The roof of its largest hall is fitted with solar panels, supported by an additional photovoltaic power plant. Together, they generate approximately 500 MWh of electricity annually, resulting in a reduction of up to 480 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.
Aligned with its energy-efficiency goals, the venue is currently replacing all lighting systems with LED technology. Its halls are equipped with advanced heating and cooling systems, allowing precise monitoring and optimisation of energy use. Renovation efforts follow environmentally conscious principles, incorporating energy-saving AV equipment and natural materials for exhibition installations.
Designing out waste because every detail counts
The venue’s approach to waste reduction is both structured and forward-thinking. Currently, 12 different types of waste are separated at its central waste management area, including glass, mixed materials, cardboard, EPS (styrofoam), and carpets. At least five of these categories are processed for raw material recovery. Newly introduced flooring solutions in the A–C complex will eliminate the need for disposable carpets, significantly cutting event-related waste.
Building social value
The venue also maintains and expands its green outdoor areas, with tree planting initiatives that support urban biodiversity. Looking ahead, a modern bike station with charging facilities for electric bicycles is planned, promoting green mobility among visitors and delegates. Sustainable transport is further supported through a partnership with Ljubljana Public Transport, which offers free city transit to all event participants.
Participants at Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre enjoy easy, emission-free access to the venue thanks to free public transport and upcoming electric bike charging stations — making every journey to a conference or congress cleaner, greener, and more convenient. |
Beyond environmental efforts, Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre is committed to social sustainability and positive local impact. It fosters an inclusive, supportive working environment, ensures accessibility for all visitors, and collaborates with local suppliers to strengthen the regional economy. Locally produced food, fair trade practices, and transparent governance are embedded in the venue’s operations, with partners selected based on shared sustainability values.
Measuring what matters – Conventa Experience
The Ljubljana Exhibition and Convention Centre proudly hosts Conventa, one of the most sustainability-driven B2B events in the meetings industry. As one of the first global events to align its sustainability reporting with the CSRD Directive, Conventa sets a high standard for environmentally and socially responsible event practices — supported by a shared, data-driven commitment between organiser and venue.
